Discussions

Discussion boards are a great way to communicate in the online classroom environment.  Many classes use these to discuss topics to engage the students further in the material.  This blog post will help the student understand discussion boards in It's Learning.

To access a discussion board for a class (assuming there is one created for your course), go to the course page after logging in to It's Learning.  Find the right unit on the left (if this course uses the unit folders) and click on a discussion assignment.  Many professors will put the discussion question at the top of this page, and below that the student can read other students' posts.  Each post on the list is an individual thread under the discussion board, so if you want to reply to a specific student's post, click on their post and find the reply button on there.

Depending on the course, some professors would rather have their discussion board be under one individual thread (such as submitting questions).  To do this, make sure you click on the thread (post) in the discussion and then hit reply, otherwise you'll start your own thread.

Discussion boards in It's Learning aren't too difficult of a feature to understand, but it does take some getting used to.  The Online Learning office does suggest to write our your response in a Word document and then copy the text into the It's Learning page - that way if you have computer trouble or It's Learning happens to mess up you don't have to rewrite it.  We hope this post was helpful, and as always if you have questions contact the Online Learning office and we'll be happy to assist you!
